In the last century, the majority of Canadians were of British and French origin, in addition to indigenous peoples. However, successive waves of immigrants from many different countries have considerably diversified Canada's ethnic makeup: Canadian (mostly Anglophone and Francophone Europeans) about 32%, English about 20%, French 15%, Scottish 14%, Irish 14%, German 10%, Italian 4%, Chinese 5%, North American Indian about 4%.
