EFTA & Malaysia Continue Free Trade Talks
Delegations from the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) states – Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland – and Malaysia met for a fifth round of negotiations towards an Economic Partnership Agreement from October 6 to 9, 2015, in Oslo, Norway.
Expert groups discussed text proposals in the following areas: trade in goods, including market access; investment; rules of origin; trade facilitation; technical barriers to trade; sanitary and phytosanitary measures; trade remedies; and trade and sustainable development.
Further expert meetings are planned for services, competition, legal and horizontal issues, intellectual property rights, and rules of origin. Negotiations began in April 2014 and a sixth round is planned for spring 2016 in Malaysia.
Merchandise trade between the EFTA States and Malaysia amounted to USD2.54bn in 2014, with exports from EFTA of USD1.53bn and imports from Malaysia of about USD1bn.
